Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Veteran quarterback Dak Prescott will have season-ending surgery to repair his injured hamstring, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday.

Jones made the announcement during his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan. Prescott partially tore the hamstring during the Cowboys' 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Nov. 3 in Atlanta. He missed their 34-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday in Arlington, Texas.

"He will have [surgery] tomorrow," Jones said. "He'll have it there in New York. He wants to do that there. He's got great medical doctors up there. It's a more common injury in hockey. And he's got doctors who are very familiar with how to repair that, and his prognosis is wonderful.

"It just means that we're not going to have him the rest of the year."

Second-string quarterback Cooper Rush and third-string option Trey Lance took snaps during the Cowboys' Week 10 loss to the Eagles.

Rush completed 13 of 23 passes for 45 yards and lost two fumbles. Lance completed 4 of 6 passes for 21 yards and an interception. Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy told reporters Monday that Rush will start in Week 11.

"We've got a lot of faith in Cooper," McCarthy said. "Everybody believes in him."

Prescott completed 64.7% of his throws for 1,978 yards, 11 scores and eight interceptions through eight starts this season. The three-time Pro Bowl selection completed a career-best 69.5% of his passes for 4,516 yards, an NFL-best 36 touchdowns and nine interceptions over 17 starts last season.

The Cowboys signed Prescott to a four-year, $240 million contract extension in September. They traded a fourth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for Lance in 2023.

Rush completed 35 of 62 (56.5%) attempts for 212 yards, a touchdown and an interception in five appearances this season. Lance saw his first action of the season in Sunday's loss.

The Cowboys (3-6) sit in third place in the NFC East, behind the division leading Eagles (7-2) and second-place Washington Commanders (7-3).

They will host the Houston Texans (6-4) at 8:15 p.m. EST Monday in Arlington.
