Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Denver Broncos linebacker Bradley Chubb will undergo ankle surgery Wednesday and hopes to return later this season, the team announced.

The team said Tuesday that Chubb will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle to remove a bone spur. The Broncos said his timetable for return will become "clearer" after the procedure.

"I'm going to push everything I can to get back to these games and hopefully it's sooner rather than later," Chubb told the team website. "My mindset is just going to be attack it 100% every day."

Chubb, who sustained the injury about three weeks ago, is expected to miss at least six to eight weeks of action.

He sat out for the Broncos' Week 1 win over the New York Giants. He played in their win last week over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Chubb joined the Broncos as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-4, 275-pound outside linebacker totaled one tackle in the Broncos' Week 2 win.

He posted 12 sacks as a rookie and 7.5 sacks in 14 games last season.

The Broncos (2-0) host the New York Jets (0-2) at 4:05 p.m. EDT Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver. Rookie Jonathan Cooper is listed behind Chubb on the Broncos depth chart.
