MIAMI GARDENS, Fla., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa sustained a rib injury from a first-quarter hit he took from Buffalo Bills defender A.J. Epenesa on Sunday in Miami Gardens, Fla. He did not return to the game.

Tagovailoa was sacked twice on the Dolphins' first drive of the game. He sustained his rib injury on the Dolphins second drive 4:16 into the first quarter. The Bills beat the Dolphins 35-0.

The Dolphins said Tagovailoa bruised his ribs and he will get additional tests Monday.

The Dolphins lined up for a 4th-and-2 play from the Bills 48-yard line. Tagovailoa took the snap, stepped back in the pocket and fired a pass to his right. Epenesa raced by Dolphins right tackle Jesse Davis and slammed into Tagovailoa as he released the throw.

Tagovailoa held onto his midsection and stayed on the ground for several minutes. Dolphins trainers tended to the quarterback and helped him walk off the field.

The Dolphins then carted Tagovailoa to the locker room. He did not return to the sideline.
