Sept. 16 (UPI) -- San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw is facing an extended absence because of a groin injury that he suffered in last week's win over the Detroit Lions.

League sources told ESPN, NFL Media and The Athletic on Thursday that Greenlaw is scheduled to have surgery to repair the groin issue in the near future. According to the outlets, the linebacker is expected to be out until November before being reassessed.

Greenlaw appeared to sustain the injury while returning an interception 39 yards for a touchdown before halftime in the 49ers' 41-33 win over the Lions on Sunday. Azeez Al-Shaair replaced Greenlaw for the remainder of the game.

On Monday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that Greenlaw would be day-to-day this week. The injury, however, proved to be more significant than expected, leading to the longer recovery timeline.

Greenlaw is the third 49ers starter this week to suffer an injury that carries a multi-week absence, joining running back Raheem Mostert and cornerback Jason Verrett. Mostert and Verrett will miss the remainder of the season due to major knee injuries.

Al-Shaair, who is projected to fill in for Greenlaw in the lineup, finished Sunday's game with seven total tackles, including two for loss, and two passes defensed.

The 49ers are set to battle the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
