Aug. 17 (UPI) -- The Jacksonville Jaguars released Tim Tebow as part of their latest round of cuts to reduce their roster to 85 players, the team announced Tuesday.

The team waived the tight end in addition to cornerback D.J. Daniel. The Jaguars also waived wide receivers Josh Imatorbhebhe and Tim Jones with injury designations. The team placed defensive tackle Daniel Ross on injured reserve.

"Thankful for the highs and even the lows, the opportunities, and the setbacks," Tebow tweeted Tuesday. "I've never wanted to make decisions out of fear of failure and I'm grateful for the chance to have pursued a dream.

"Thank you to the Jaguars organization and everyone who has supported me in this journey."

Tebow, 34, signed a one-year contract with the Jaguars in May. The former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback hoped to transition to tight end this off-season, but struggled at practice and in the preseason.

Tebow did not make a catch and had a poor performance as a blocker in the Jaguars' 23-13 loss to the Cleveland Browns in their first preseason game Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla.

The No. 25 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft started his career with the Denver Broncos. Tebow started 16 games in the NFL, but his prolific collegiate career never translated into success at the professional level.

He attempted to revive his football career with the New York Jets, New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles, but left the NFL in 2015 to pursue a career in Major League Baseball.

He spent four seasons in the New York Mets' Minor League system and announced his retirement from baseball in February.

New Jaguars coach Urban Meyer, who coached Tebow at the University of Florida, elected to give the former Gators star a try out this off-season.

NFL teams must reduce their rosters from 90 to 85 players by 4 p.m. EDT Tuesday. Teams must trim rosters from 85 to 80 players by 4 p.m. EDT Aug. 24. Each roster may not exceed 53 players after Aug. 31.

The New England Patriots face the Philadelphia Eagles in the first preseason game this week at 7:30 p.m. EDT Thursday in Philadelphia. The preseason ends Aug. 29 and the regular season kicks off Sept. 9.
