Jan. 27 (UPI) -- The Houston Texans are hiring Baltimore Ravens assistant David Culley to be their next head coach.
League sources told ESPN, NFL Media and the Houston Chronicle that the Texans were working to finalize a contract with Culley on Wednesday night after a second strong interview with general manager Nick Caserio and CEO Cal McNair earlier in the day.
The 65-year-old Culley, who has spent the past two seasons in Baltimore, recently completed his 27th season as an NFL coach. He will replace former Texans head coach Bill O'Brien, who was fired in October.
Along with serving as the Ravens' assistant head coach, Culley was Baltimore's passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach in 2020. The Ravens finished last in the league in passing this past season.

Culley has never been an offensive coordinator at the NFL level. He also was an assistant head coach for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2013-16 and spent the 2017 and 2018 campaigns as the Buffalo Bills' quarterbacks coach.
The Ravens will receive two third-round compensatory draft picks once Culley is officially hired by the Texans. This comes from a resolution passed in November that is intended to incentivize NFL teams to develop and hire minority candidates for head-coaching jobs and general manager positions.
The Texans also interviewed Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, former Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Caldwell and Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus for the position.
