April 27 (UPI) -- The Southeastern Conference continued its draft dominance with 63 total picks in the virtual 2020 NFL Draft, which set all-time viewership records over the weekend.
The Cincinnati Bengals started the run by selecting LSU quarterback Joe Burrow with the No. 1 overall pick. In total, 40 SEC players were drafted in the first three rounds of this year's draft, the most in history from a single conference.
The SEC finished with 63 selections across all seven rounds, falling just one pick short of its own record of 64 draftees in the 2019 draft. The Big Ten finished second among conferences with 48 picks, followed by the Pac-12 (32), ACC (27) and Big 12 (21), according to NFL Media.
LSU led all teams with 14 draft picks, breaking the SEC record for most by a single school and tying Ohio State's 2004 draft class for the most by any program in a single draft. Michigan and Ohio State each had 10 players selected, followed by Alabama (nine), Clemson (seven), Florida (seven), Georgia (seven) and Utah (seven).
The annual player selection event, which was conducted virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic, reached a record 55 million viewers over three days on ABC, ESPN, NFL Network, ESPN Deportes and other digital channels, according to the league.
In a statement released Sunday, the NFL said each day of this year's draft set records. According to the league, an average audience of about 15.6 million viewers tuned in to Round 1 on Thursday, followed by more than 8.2 million for Rounds 2 and 3 on Friday and 4.2 million viewers for Rounds 4-7 on Saturday. Each day had at least a 30 percent increase in viewership over 2019.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced draft picks from a studio in his basement because of the COVID-19 outbreak. The virtual event featured more than 600 camera feeds in the homes of draft prospects, NFL head coaches, general managers, fans and college football coaches.
"I couldn't be more proud of the efforts and collaboration of our clubs, league personnel, and our partners to conduct an efficient draft and share an unforgettable experience with millions of fans during these uncertain times," Goodell said in a statement.
"This draft is the latest chapter in the NFL's storied history of lifting the spirit of America and unifying people. In addition to celebrating the accomplishments of so many talented young men, we were pleased that this unique draft helped shine a light on today's true heroes -- the healthcare workers, first responders, and countless others on the front lines in the battle against COVID-19."
