Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Rookie quarterback Daniel Jones was a perfect 5-for-5 and threw for a score in relief of veteran Eli Manning during the New York Giants preseason-opening win against the New York Jets.

Manning started the game before being replaced by Jones in the first quarter of the 31-22 win Thursday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The Giants' longtime starter completed a three-yard pass before his team went 3-and-out on their opening drive. Sam Darnold led the Jets on a seven-play, 75-yard scoring drive before Manning's Giants took over.

The Jets punted on their next possession, giving the ball back to the Giants.

"[Jones] got all completions and he got us in the end zone," Giants coach Pat Shurmur told reporters. "That was a very effective drive. He did a good job. He had a couple of mistakes in there that we'll clean up. I guess to the naked eye it was a good job."

Jones threw a five-yard pass to Cody Latimer before finding Golden Tate with an 11-yard pass two plays later. He then hooked up with Latimer for a 31-yard connection and another first down. Jones connected with Bennie Folwer on an eight-yard pass to bring the Giants to the Jets 12-yard-line, before preparing for his first NFL touchdown toss.

He lined up in the shotgun formation on the 1st-and-10 play. Jones took the snap and dropped back. He lofted a pass to the back right corner of the end zone. The ball went over a leaping defender before landing in Fowler's arms for a touchdown.

"I thought it went well," Jones said. "It was good to move the ball down the field and score, so as far as expectations, I didn't really know what to expect. I just wanted to play well and glad we were able to move the ball and execute."

The Jets punted on their next possession before the Giants scored a second touchdown. Trevor Siemian threw a touchdown toss to Elijah McGuire at the start of the second quarter. The Jets and Giants exchanged field goals before the halftime whistle.

The Giants punted on their first two drives of the second half before scoring on a 59-yard interception return from Jake Carlock. Kyle Lauletta and Luke Falk exchanged touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to make the score final.
