Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker James Onwualu will miss the 2019 season after suffering a non-contact knee injury.

Onwualu was injured in Monday's joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens. Onwualu and Leon Jacobs were listed as co-starters at strong-side linebackers.

"It's tough. He has worked his butt off and worked real hard," Jaguars coach Doug Marrone told reporters. "I saw him [Monday] afterward. It's just a tough situation.

"You thank the player for everything he put in, but you kind of know what the road looks like ahead."

Marrone did not specify Onwualu's injury.

Onwualu had two tackles and a forced fumble in five games with the San Francisco 49ers last season.

Jacksonville opens the preseason Thursday against the Ravens in Baltimore. The Jaguars begin the regular season against the Kansas City Chiefs at home on Sept. 8.
