Aug. 6 (UPI) -- The Detroit Lions are signing offensive lineman Joe Dahl to a contract extension as he competes for the team's starting job at left guard in training camp.
League sources told the NFL Network and the Detroit Free Press on Tuesday that Dahl agreed to a two-year deal with the Lions.
The new deal keeps Dahl under contract through 2021. Financial details of the extension weren't disclosed.
The Lions selected Dahl in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Washington State. The offensive guard was named to the Pac-12 first team in 2015.
Dahl has been a key backup interior offensive lineman with the Lions, but is now competing for a starting role this season. According to the Detroit Free Press, the versatile lineman took first-team reps at left guard during Tuesday's training camp practice.
Dahl played in a career-high 10 games last season, receiving one start. In the 2017 campaign, he played in six games and garnered a career-high three starts. Across three seasons with Detroit, the 6-foot-4, 310-pound lineman has appeared in 22 regular-season matchups (four starts).
