Cowboys sign RB Alfred Morris; Ezekiel Elliott training in Mexico

July 30 (UPI) -- The Dallas Cowboys have added depth to the running back position by signing veteran Alfred Morris, while starter Ezekiel Elliott is holding out for a new contract and training in Mexico.

Elliott was not with the team when they reported to camp Friday in Oxnard, Calif. The Cowboys announced the Morris signing Monday, inking the veteran to a one-year pact. Morris, 30, played for the Cowboys in 2016 and 2017.

Sources told the Dallas Morning News and NFL Network Elliott is training in Cabo San Lucas. Elliott also trained in Cabo during his six game suspension in 2017.

Morris ran for 428 yards and two touchdowns in 12 games last season for the San Francisco 49ers. He made the Pro Bowl in two of his first three NFL seasons. He had a career-high 1,613 yards and 13 touchdowns during his rookie campaign in 2012 for the Washington Redskins.

Elliott has two years remaining on his rookie contract. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke about Elliott Sunday during an interview with CBS11.

"The point there is, you don't have to have a rushing champion to win a Super Bowl ... Emmitt [Smith] was the first one to do it. ... That's one of the dilemmas at running back is that the league knows that you can win Super Bowls and not have the Emmitt Smith back there or not have Zeke back there," Jones said. "You've got to do all of the things along with having Zeke that allow you to have other players so that you can win the Super Bowl. That's what we're going through."

Elliott, 24, has been the NFL rushing champion in two of his three seasons. He rushed for 1,434 yards and six scores in 15 starts last season, while leading the league with 304 carries and 381 touches.
