Fantasy football: Redskins likely to start Trey Quinn at slot WR

July 28 (UPI) -- Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden says Trey Quinn has "locked down" the role of the team's slot wide receiver.

Gruden made the comments at training camp Sunday in Richmond, Va. Quinn was a seventh-round pick by the Redskins in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Southern Methodist University product had nine receptions for 75 yards and a score in three games during his rookie campaign.

Quinn missed a large portion of his 2018 season due to an ankle sprain. He is expected to see much more time on the field this season following the departure of Jamison Crowder in free agency.

"Trey Quinn has the inside spot pretty much locked down. [Darvin] Kidsy and [Cam] Sims are competing for a backup role probably," Gruden said. "It's a good group. They all bring something different to the table."

This isn't the first time Gruden has lauded Quinn for his work in the slot. The Redskins coach said last week that Quinn had "taken over the inside slot role." He also said in March he is "excited" for Quinn and is ready to watch him jump into the role and "dominate the position."

Quinn will basically be free in fantasy football drafts this season and is a legitimate sleeper in deep leagues. He has much more appeal in PPR leagues.

"I expect him to take advantage of the inside receiver roll, but he can play outside in base [offensive personnel] as well," Gruden said Friday. "He's a very versatile player, but we just have to get him the ball and see how he does.

"Just like all of these other guys, he's going to take advantage of the routes when they're given to him, when the progression takes it to him, he has to make some plays and get some separation [from a defensive backs]."
