July 27 (UPI) -- The San Francisco 49ers signed former Washington Redskins and Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Niles Paul.

San Francisco announced the one-year contract Friday. Paul, 29, had 10 catches for 98 yards in six games last season. He had a career-high 507 yards and a score on 39 catches in 16 games during his 2014 campaign for the Redskins.

Paul entered the league as a fifth-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He played his first six seasons for the Redskins before signing a two-year deal with the Jaguars last off-season in free agency. Jacksonville released Paul in December. Paul sustained a season-ending MCL sprain in October.

The 49ers also signed offensive lineman Dillon Day and released defensive lineman Cedric Thornton. Paul slides in as a depth option behind starter George Kittle.
