Defensive lineman Mike Daniels signs one-year deal with Detroit Lions

July 27 (UPI) -- The Detroit Lions agreed to terms with Pro Bowl defensive lineman Mike Daniels, who was released by the Green Bay Packers earlier this week in a cap-saving move.

League sources told ESPN and the NFL Network on Friday that Daniels agreed to a one-year contract worth $9.1 million, with $7.8 million guaranteed.

Four other NFL teams offered Daniels the same money or better, but he wanted to play for Lions head coach Matt Patricia and stay in the division to play his former team and NFC North rival, according to the NFL Network.

The Packers selected Daniels in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Iowa. Before his release, he became a key defensive player for Green Bay, starting 72 of 102 career games. He started all but one of the games he played in since the beginning of the 2014 campaign.

Daniels recorded 18 tackles, two sacks and one pass defensed in 10 games (nine starts) last season. He was placed on injured reserve due to a foot injury in December, ending his season after 10 contests.

Daniels was a Pro Bowl selection in 2017. He has 225 combined tackles, 29 sacks, one interception, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and five passes defensed in his NFL career.

Daniels bolsters a Lions defensive line rotation that features Damon Harrison, Da'Shawn Hand, A'Shawn Robinson and rookie P.J. Johnson.
