May 23 (UPI) -- Veteran quarterback Alex Smith was back on the field and throwing a football during the third day of Washington Redskins OTAs on Thursday in Ashburn, Va.

Smith's appearance was an encouraging sign for his recovery from a broken leg, which he sustained in Week 11 of last season. Smith missed the remainder of the season after the injury. He has since undergone multiple surgeries to combat infections.

"Alex Smith at day 3 of OTAs supporting his teammates," the Redskins wrote for the caption on a social media post, showing Smith tossing a football.

He has been seen this off-season wearing a large brace on his right leg. Smith isn't expected to play during the 2019 season.

The Redskins traded for veteran quarterback Case Keenum in March. The NFC East franchise then selected former Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins with the No. 15 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Smith, 35, completed 62.5 percent of his throws for 2,180 yards, 10 scores and five interceptions in 10 starts for the Redskins in 2018. He posted a 6-4 record as a starter. The three-time Pro Bowl selection joined the Redskins in March 2018 as part of a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Smith is set to make more than $20 million this season. He signed a four-year, $94 contract extension with the Redskins on March 19, 2018.

The Redskins return for their next session of OTAs on May 28 before reporting to mandatory minicamp on June 4.
