Feb. 11 (UPI) -- The Carolina Panthers have signed safety Eric Reid to a three-year contract extension.

Incentives could push the deal's total value to $24 million.

The 27-year-old was set to become an unrestricted free agent following his 2018 campaign for the Panthers. Reid totaled 71 tackles, five passes defensed, a sack and an interception in 13 starts this season. The 2013 Pro Bowl selection spent the first five seasons of his career with the San Francisco 49ers, before signing with the Panthers in September.

Reid was the first player to kneel alongside Colin Kaepernick in protest during the playing of the national anthem during the 2016 season.
