Despite New England's best efforts, Patriots wide receiver Josh Gordon was suspended last week for "multiple violations" of the NFL's drug policy, according to the NFL Network.

Gordon's drug violations were for "more than marijuana," the network said.

The troubled wide receiver said on Thursday he was going to step aside from football to focus on his mental health.

While a member of the Cleveland Browns, Gordon missed the entire 2015 and 2016 seasons due to suspension.

CBS Sports reported that the Patriots were somewhat blindsided by the suspension.

The New England coaching staff found out on Thursday morning, within hours of Gordon releasing his statement. The staff also did not receive word of Gordon's suspension until Thursday as well.

Reports have surfaced that the Patriots employed a "security" team, which included a former team pastor, to be with Gordon at all times to help keep Gordon from stumbling.

Gordon, only 27, played in just 11 games for Cleveland between 2014 and 2018. He was traded to New England for a conditional fifth-round pick before this season started.
