Jaguars drop Dolphins with help of late pick-6

MIAMI, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Telvin Smith awakened a jaded crowd with a fourth-quarter interception for a score, helping the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Miami Dolphins 17-7 on Sunday in Miami.

"Listen, don't think you are going to chase down, tackle me, when I've got the rock," Smith said. "None of that or I'm going to point at you and get you right. I'm telling you, today was just big plays. Everybody playing hard. I knew they were about to throw the pick when we had the pressure. I saw the sack about to go down, I saw his eyes get big."

"He shouldn't have thrown it to me."

Smith's 34-yard return came with 9:43 remaining in the clash, which lacked offensive spark. Miami and Jacksonville each scored on their respective opening drives, but did not put up more points until Kai Forbath gave the Jaguars their first lead with a third-quarter field goal.

The Dolphins took over possession following the 26-yard kick. Ryan Tannehill was intercepted four plays later. Smith lurked in the flat on the play as Tannehill was slow to get the ball out. The late release enabled the linebacker to jump the route and catch the football, before he ran in for six points.

"We had a little in-cut, flat combo, down-the-field throw, so I was trying to wait on the end to get to his spot," Tannehill said, regarding his interception. "My feet got grabbed. I should have just thrown the ball away over the back's head. I tried to make a play, dude wrapped around my feet. I've just got to be smart there and throw the ball away over the back's head."

Jacksonville's stacked secondary silenced Miami's receivers. Danny Amendola was the Dolphins' top pass-catcher with three catches for 40 yards. Dolphins receiver Kenny Stills was limited to just one catch for five yards in the loss.

The Dolphins battle the Buffalo Bills at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 30 at New Era Field in Buffalo. The Jaguars end their season against the Houston Texans at 1 p.m. on Dec. 30 at NRG Stadium in Houston.
