The Jets announced the move on Friday. New York promoted De'Angelo Henderson from the practice squad to the active roster in a corresponding transaction.
Crowell, 25, has 685 yards and six scores on 143 carries in 13 games this season. He also had 152 yards on 21 receptions.
The fifth-year running back injured his toe in Sunday's win against the Buffalo Bills. He was already ruled out for the Jets' game on Saturday against the Houston Texans. Crowell was previously dealing with a different toe ailment.
Eli McGuire and Trenton Cannon are the Jets' top two running backs. Henderson has spent most of the season on the team's practice squad. He was activated to the 58-man roster in Week 8 against the Chicago Bears. He was released the following week before re-signing with the practice squad.
Crowell signed with the AFC East franchise this offseason in free agency, inking a three-year contract in March. He appeared in every game this season before landing on injured reserve.
The Jets host the Texans at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
