Carson Wentz did not practice on Wednesday due to a back injury that has raised concerns about the availability of the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback for the rest of the season.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Wentz is not expected to play for the Eagles (6-7) on Sunday (8:20 p.m. ET) against the host Los Angeles Rams (11-2).

Given the time of the injury, Wentz -- who is considered the face of the franchise -- could be sidelined for the remainder of the season with Philadelphia residing two games behind the NFC East-leading Dallas Cowboys (8-5) with three games to play. The Eagles, however, are in the mix for a potential wild-card spot.

"We're going to focus on today, get through today, and see where he is at the end of the day," Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said when asked if there's a chance Wentz misses Sunday's game.

Wentz was listed on the injury report with back soreness during Weeks 7 and 8, but Pederson said the 25-year-old did not add to the issue during Sunday's 29-23 overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

"We're going to rest him and continue to evaluate him and make sure he's good," Pederson said.

Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Nick Foles will take over under center should Wentz be unable to face the Rams.

Foles stepped in after Wentz sustained a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee during a game on Dec. 10, 2017, against the Rams.

Wentz was considered the front-runner for league MVP honors before the injury and had to watch Foles guide the Eagles to a 41-33 win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII.

The 29-year-old Foles completed 65 percent of his passes for 451 yards with one touchdown and one interception as the Eagles split their first two games of the season.

Wentz relieved Foles and completed 279-of-401 passes for 3,074 yards with 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 11 contests in 2018. The 6-foot-5, 237-pounder has thrown for 70 touchdowns against 28 interceptions in 40 career games since being selected by the Eagles with the second overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.
