Green Bay Packers fire Winston Moss after tweet about Aaron Rodgers, team

The Green Bay Packers parted ways with associate head coach Winston Moss, the team announced.

Moss, who also coached outside linebackers, was let go on Tuesday by interim head coach Joe Philbin.

"We thank Winston for his contributions to the Packers over the past 13 years," Philbin said in a statement. "We hope for the best for Winston and his family moving forward."

Moss, 52, was part of former head coach Mike McCarthy's original staff in 2006. McCarthy was fired on Sunday after the Packers (4-7-1) lost their third straight game with a 20-17 setback to the Arizona Cardinals at Lambeau Field.

Earlier on Tuesday, Moss tweeted his thoughts on what the Packers needed in a head coach.

"Ponder this... what Championship teams have are great leadership! Period! It's not the offensive guru trend, it's not the safe trend. Find somebody that is going to hold #12 and everybody in this building to a #LombardiStandard! Period! #losingsucks!"

No. 12 is star quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

"Aaron was not part at all in the decision to move on from Mike," Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy said.

Both Murphy and general manager Brian Gutekunst said they would accept Rodgers' input on the hiring of the next coach but that he would not be part of the selection process.
