Wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. of the Detroit Lions is seeking a second opinion on what was diagnosed as only a bone bruise in his right knee because he is not getting better, ESPN reported on Friday.

The Lions declared him out of Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers.

Jones, who sustained the injury in the second half of last week's game against the Chicago Bears, was listed as day-to-day early in the week, but did not practice all week and reportedly is experiencing significant pain in the knee.

The original diagnosis was that Jones did not suffer an injury to his MCL and ACL, making the Lions believe that he would recover fairly quickly, but that has not happened.

When the Lions dealt top wide receiver Golden Tate to the Philadelphia Eagles at the trade deadline, Jones stepped up opposite Kenny Golladay, the new No. 1 target for quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Jones, who has been the Lions' primary deep threat, is expected to be replaced in the starting lineup by T.J. Jones. Wide receivers Bruce Ellington and Brandon Powell -- or running back Theo Riddick -- will play when Detroit goes with a three-receiver set.

The Lions, who have an open spot on the roster, also could bring up Andy Jones or Chris Lacy from the practice squad.

Marvin Jones has caught 35 passes for 508 yards and five touchdowns this season.
