Safety Landon Collins has been an outspoken member of the New York Giants, and it sometimes led to uncomfortable situations.

Nonetheless, Collins reportedly said he would like to be a captain of the Giants, although he realizes it's not entirely up to him.

"There are a lot of great guys on that defense that can be captain," Collins said, via NJ.com. "I'd like to have the 'C' on my chest, but it's up to my guys. ... Being a leader is tough: You have to make fast decisions and be an outspoken person and you have to gain the respect of others so they will listen to you. It's hard, but it's a role I'll always take heavy on my heart."

Collins said he has spoken to former Giants defensive end and captain Justin Tuck about becoming more of a leader on the team. Tuck believes Collins should take on more leadership responsibilities since he is perceived to be the Giants' best player.

Collins was a first-team All-Pro in 2016 and has been selected to the Pro Bowl twice.

The Giants are trying to bounce back from a 3-13 season.

Collins told reporters during the offseason that tackle Ereck Flowers skipped the early phase of voluntary workouts because his feelings were hurt by the team's decision to move him to right tackle.

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur reprimanded Collins for making that comment. Collins has since acknowledged he should not have said it publicly, saying the Giants "have to keep what's going on between us."

Collins also called cornerback Eli Apple a "cancer" late in the 2017 season, which caused some animosity, although the two players said they have resolved their differences.
