Report: Odell Beckham Jr. still mulling holdout

Odell Beckham Jr. insisted a week ago that he will be in attendance when the New York Giants open training camp next month.

Despite that vow, a report by SNY suggests that Beckham could still be a holdout if contract negotiations between the team and the mercurial wide receiver continue to lag.

Beckham wants a new contract that will make him the highest-paid wideout in the game. He is set to play for $8.5 million in 2018 on the fifth-year option of his rookie deal.

Just a week ago, Beckham appeared to shut down the notion of a holding, telling SNY at his football camp in New Jersey. "No. No holdout."

Asked if he will show up when training camp begins on July 25, Beckham answered: "Yes sir. Yes you will."

Yet, despite those strong words, the website reported that a holdout is still on the table, citing sources in Beckham's camp.

Beckham is recovering from a surgically repaired ankle, an injury that limited him to four games last season. The one snag for the team, according to the report, is that officials want to see Beckham healthy and on the field.

Giants quarterback Eli Manning provided an update on Beckham on Friday during his passing academy, telling NFL Media that he threw to Beckham following a practice at minicamp.

"He looks great," said Manning. "He looks healthy."

Beckham attended the team's first three organized team activities and was also present at three days of voluntary minicamp before the 2018 NFL Draft. He missed the final seven OTAs before participating in the three-day minicamp on a limited basis.

Manning said he thinks Beckham is eager to re-establish himself as the dominant wide receiver in the league.

"I think last year, it was tough on him being injured and going through those things," Manning said. "He wants to come out and have a big year, play well and get to scoring touchdowns and celebrating and having fun again. I think he misses that part of his life -- the excitement of playing football and winning games, and enjoying that part of it."

Should Beckham decide to stay away from camp, New York has the option to fine him up to $40,000 per day.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Beckham's impact was noticeable following his season-ending injury. Without their best offensive player, the Giants slumped to a 3-13 record last season while New York's offense ranked 31st in the league in scoring at 15.4 points per game.

Beckham has 313 catches for 4,424 yards with 38 touchdowns in four seasons with the Giants. He was named the 2014 Offensive Rookie of the Year.
