Defensive end Melvin Ingram is setting the bar high for the Los Angeles Chargers this season. How high? Well, Ingram said he envisions the Chargers winning the Super Bowl.
That's a rather lofty claim considering the team saw its playoff drought extend to four years following its 9-7 mark in 2017. Furthermore, the Chargers have only been to the Super Bowl on one occasion, and that result wasn't pretty.
"We [haven't] been to the playoffs for a while," the 29-year-old Ingram told reporters earlier this week. "I think it's going to be crazy. This Super Bowl we're going to win; we're ready. We're grinding. We're just going to keep grinding.
"That's what our main objective goal is, to win a Super Bowl. Keep fighting. Keep playing. Keep grinding. No matter what. That's the goal: We've got to bring a Super Bowl to the city."
Super Bowl predictions before the start of the preseason are nothing new, as Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle Malik Jackson said his team would win the NFL's signature game during July last year. The Jaguars made a good run at it and ventured to the AFC Championship Game before falling to the New England Patriots.
Ingram recorded 10.5 sacks to go along with 59 tackles and two fumble recoveries in 16 games last season after signing a four-year, $66 million contract.
He has collected 259 tackles and 35 sacks in 77 career regular-season games since being selected by the Chargers with the 18th overall selection of the 2012 NFL Draft.
