June 3 (UPI) -- Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews needs surgery after being hit in the face during a charity softball game.

Matthews was on the mound pitching when Packers guard Lucas Patrick was at the plate Saturday at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisc. The six-time Pro Bowl selection threw a pitch and Patrick smacked it directly back to him. The ball drilled Matthews on the nose.

He then fell to the ground before getting up and covering his face with a baseball glove. Matthews left the field immediately.

"Thank you for all the concern and well-wishes," he tweeted Saturday. "I busted my nose pretty good and will have surgery once the swelling subsides. Thankful as it could have been much more serious."

Matthews, 32, missed two games last season and missed four games in 216. He played all 16 games during his 2014 and 2015 campaigns.

Matthews and wide receiver Davante Adams were hosting the Green and Gold Charity Softball Game. The linebacker's team won 10-9. Packers tight end Robert Tonyan hit a walk-off home run to win the game.

"Tough guy, because I would've still been on the ground right now," Adams said, according to Packers.com. "We're just going to pray for him and hope that he feels better soon."
