Tight end Austin Roberts, an undrafted rookie out of UCLA, signed with the Los Angeles Chargers, the team announced on Wednesday.

Chargers tight end Hunter Henry was lost for the season when he tore his right ACL during practice last week. There has been speculation that the Chargers might bring back 37-year-old Antonio Gates for another season.

Quarterback Philip Rivers said he would welcome back Gates, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and the Chargers' all-time leading receiver, and that remains a possibility.

Roberts caught 35 passes for 500 yards in 24 games for UCLA over the last three seasons. He joins a tight end corps that includes Virgil Green, Braedon Bowman and Sean Culkin.

To make room for Roberts on the roster, the Chargers waived long snapper Anthony Kukwa.
