Los Angeles Chargers CB Jason Verrett not cleared to fully practice

Injured Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett is still not cleared to fully practice.

Verrett played just one game last season before his season abruptly ended with a knee injury.

ESPN reported that Verrett cannot fully practice in the team's organized team activities because he is still recovering from last year's knee surgery.

The Chargers still have plenty of cornerbacks competing, including starters Trevor Williams and Casey Hayward as well as Desmond King. In addition, Michael Davis, Craig Mager and Jeff Richards were either on last year's active roster or practice squad.

"There's great competition amongst them," defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said, according to ESPN. "Every play, you have to be on it. With competition, it just keeps elevating the level of play."

Verrett, who was a first-round pick of the Chargers in 2014 out of TCU and played in the Pro Bowl after the 2015 season, shut it down in 2016 after a Week 4 game against the New Orleans Saints when an MRI exam revealed he had a partially torn ACL in his left knee.

After surgery to repair the issue, Verrett went through extensive rehab to work his way back onto the field. He was held out of offseason work on the field before slowly increasing his workload during training camp, playing in just one preseason game.

Verrett experienced soreness in his knee in the 2017 season opener against the Denver Broncos after playing 63 snaps and making one tackle.

Verrett has played in just 25 career games -- recording 80 tackles and five interceptions -- and has missed 39 games.
