New York Giants CB Eli Apple embarrassed by fights last season

Eli Apple's second season was an embarrassment, according to the New York Giants cornerback.

"Was I embarrassed? Of course," Apple told reporters at the Giants' organized team activities on Monday. "Nobody wants to go out the way I went out. I mean, it was all over the place, so of course."

As the Giants careened to a 3-13 finish, Apple's season was highlighted by controversy and poor play.

He started seven games and was suspended for the final game of the season against the Washington Redskins. He also failed to intercept a pass and Pro Football Focus said he was ranked the 72nd-best cornerback in the league.

Apple's standing on the team deteriorated so much that Giants safety Landon Collins offered a scathing assessment of his teammate by describing him as a "cancer" and a player that "needs to grow up."

Since getting the harsh assessment from Collins, the two players have talked, and Apple described their relationship as "great" on Monday.

Apple was New York's first-round pick in 2016 and helped them win 11 games and reach the playoffs as a rookie. After his turbulent second season, new general manager Dave Gettleman and coach Pat Shurmur are giving him a clean slate for 2018.
