The 26-year-old's exact recovery time is expected to be known after the surgery, but NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that it will be "several months" under any circumstances.

Kouandjio started the final six games last season for the Redskins, who were ravaged by injuries along the offensive line.

He was expected to compete for a starting job with Shaun Lauvao and Ty Nsekhe.

Kouandjio, a fourth-round pick by the Redskins in 2015 out of Alabama, was among the final cuts by the team prior to the start of last season.

He landed on the practice squad of the Baltimore Ravens before Washington signed him following a season-ending injury to Lauvao.
