The Philadelphia Eagles will add depth to their backfield with the expected signing of running back Matt Jones, according to a report Wednesday.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Jones won a three-man competition for the available spot.

Jones was released by the Indianapolis Colts after the 2018 NFL Draft.

The 6-foot-3, 239-pound Jones was considered to be the Washington Redskins' running back of the future when he was selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft out of the University of Florida. He had his best season in 2016 with 99 carries for 460 yards and three touchdowns.

Jones was released by the Redskins and latched on with the Colts in 2017. He didn't make much of an impact in Indianapolis, rushing five times for 14 yards in five games.

He's expected to provide depth behind Jay Ajayi, Corey Clement and Darren Sproles.
