2018 NFL Combine: Wyoming QB Josh Allen gushes about Giants' Pat Shurmur

Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen has the physical traits that could make him the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, even after an uneven college career.

If not No. 1, what about No. 2?

The New York Giants hold that pick after Cleveland's No. 1 selection, and Allen, based on comments to the New York Daily News, wouldn't mind that destination. The quarterback had high praise after meeting with the Giants and new coach Pat Shurmur.

"I'd want to play for him because he just had this kind of silent vibe to him," Allen told the Daily News.

"He was kind of reserved, and at the same time I can feel his presence and understand how much he loves football, how much he knows football. He put me up on the board, he was talking over some things with me and it was just coming out of his mouth so quickly and so smooth, and he's a brilliant mind. And he's gonna be doing some really big things in New York."

Allen had an impressive throwing session Saturday at the Combine, although his career accuracy at Wyoming -- 56.2 percent -- is a red flag that is a factor in preventing any consensus of opinion about Allen's draft stock.

He talked earlier in the week about how he would feel about being drafted by the Browns, who also have the No. 4 pick in the draft.

"I think Cleveland is going in the right direction," he said.

"I think they have all the right pieces. A lot of draft picks early on, a lot of cap space to go get guys in free agency. So I think it's a good spot to be in, if you are fortunate enough to be taken by them -- whether it be at No. 1 or 4. I would definitely embrace that opportunity to be the No. 1 overall pick. Every QB would love to be that, it's no different for me."

Allen was the most physically impressive of the quarterbacks at the Combine. He measured at 6-foot-4 7/8 and 237 pounds, with 10 1/8-inch hands. He could compete as the top quarterback selected, and the top overall pick, with USC's Sam Darnold and UCLA's Josh Rosen, with Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield not far behind and Louisville's Lamar Jackson also being a potential first-rounder.

The Giants aren't necessarily in the market for a quarterback, having Eli Manning and 2016 third-rounder Davis Webb. Other options at the No. 2 pick could be Penn State running back Saquon Barkley, Notre Dame offensive guard Quenton Nelson or a defensive ace, such as North Carolina State end Bradley Chubb and Alabama's Minkah Fitzpatrick.

But Allen is still intrigued by the possibility of going to the Giants.

"[Shurmur] kind of reminds me of how my offensive coordinator [Brent Vigen] was at Wyoming," he told the Daily News.

"They're not gonna be the guy to get in your face and 'MF' you or do any of that stuff for doing something wrong. But they're gonna let you know when you do something wrong. They're gonna try to guide you in the right direction. They're gonna be calm and even-toned the whole time. That's just the sense that I got from him, and he's just got this demeanor about him that's really cool."
