Dec. 6 (UPI) -- The New England Patriots have re-signed linebacker Jonathan Freeny.
New England made the move official on Wednesday afternoon.

Freeny, 28, was cut this summer during final roster cuts on Sept. 2. He spent training camp with the Patriots after being with the team for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. The 6-foot-2, 255-pound defender entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent signing with the Miami Dolphins. The Rutgers product spent his first season on the Dolphins' practice squad, but cracked the active roster from 2012 to 2014. Freeny signed with the Patriots on March 11, 2015 as a free agent.
He also has spent time with the Baltimore Ravens and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Freeny appeared in three games this season with the Ravens.
The linebacker has 68 tackles on defense, 29 special teams tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one pass defensed in 65 career games. Freeny has 11 career starts, all with the Patriots.
New England had an open roster spot after the suspension of star tight end Rob Gronkowski. Patriots linebacker Kyle Van Noy is currently dealing with a calf injury, which occurred on Nov. 26 against the Dolphins.

The Patriots face those same Dolphins at 8:30 p.m. Monday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Freeny will be wearing jersey No. 44.
New England also has Elandon Roberts, David Harris, Marquis Flowers and Nicholas Grigsby on their unofficial depth chart at linebacker.
