The New York Giants lost another defensive player when they placed Pro Bowl cornerback Janoris Jenkins on injured reserve Wednesday.

Jenkins was scheduled to undergo season-ending ankle surgery Wednesday, the team announced.

The left ankle has hindered Jenkins for about the past eight weeks, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The injury worsened after Jenkins aggravated the ankle during an interception return for a touchdown last Thursday night against the Washington Redskins.

Jenkins, 29, started all nine games in which he played this season. He missed the Sept. 18 game against the Detroit Lions with an ankle injury and the Nov. 5 game against the Los Angeles Rams because he was suspended by the team.

Jenkins has a team-high three interceptions this season, along with 31 tackles, a team-high nine passes defensed and a forced fumble.

The Giants (2-9) currently have 19 players on injured reserve, including five players going on IR this week

To take Jenkins' place on the roster, the Giants signed defensive tackle Khyri Thornton. He is the fifth defensive player to join the Giants this week in preparation for Sunday's game against the Raiders in Oakland.

The 6-foot-3, 315-pound Thornton played in 23 games (six starts) for Detroit from 2015-17. He had 28 career tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble.

This season, Thornton missed the first six games while serving a suspension for violating the NFL substance-abuse policy. He played in four games for the Lions this season with four tackles before being released on Nov. 21.

The Giants will take a new-look lineup into Sunday's game with quarterback Geno Smith starting over Eli Manning, who was benched on Tuesday after starting 210 straight games.
