Andre Ellington: Arizona Cardinals cut veteran RB

Nov. 20 (UPI) -- The Arizona Cardinals have released running back Andre Ellington.

Arizona announced the move on Monday. The Cardinals signed running back Bronson Hill to the practice squad in a corresponding transaction.

Ellington, 28, joined the Cardinals in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. The Clemson product led the league with 5.5 yards per carry during his rookie campaign, running for 652 yards and three scores on 118 carries. The 5-foot-10, 199 pound running back had just 96 yards on 34 carries in 2016.

Ellington piled up 53 yards and a score on 15 carries in eight games this season. He was a healthy scratch from Sunday's game against the Houston Texans and hasn't seen much work since the Cardinals traded for New Orleans Saints running back Adrian Peterson in October.

Hill entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent signing in 2015 with the Buffalo Bills. The Eastern Michigan product spent this preseason with the Minnesota Vikings and was on the practice squad until getting released on Nov. 7. Hill, 24, has also spent time on the practice squads of the Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins and the Saints.

With Ellington departing the Cardinals' backfield, D.J. Foster should see more work as the team's third-down running back. The Cardinals also have Kerwynn Williams on the depth chart, backing up Peterson.
