Nov. 16 (UPI) -- You might not have known that Detroit Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones can sing, but he shocked Katy Perry with his voice on American Idol.

Jones, 27, tried out for the acclaimed singing competition this summer. The episode won't air until next spring, but ESPN posted a clip from the show on Wednesday.

The wide receiver picked the song "I Can't Make You Love Me."

"Why didn't you pursue music and why did you pursue [football]?," Perry asked.

"He ran a 4.3 [40 yard dash]," singer and judge Luke Bryan said.

Jones actually ran a 4.46 at the NFL scouting combine. The Cincinnati Bengals drafted Jones in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

"I could have done it earlier on, but I was playing sports so...," Jones responed. Jones said his Lions teammates didn't know he was a singer. The 6 foot 2, 198 pound pass catcher has 537 yards and five touchdowns on 34 receptions this season. Jones joined the Lions in 2016. He signed a five-year, $40 million contract in 2016. But Jones might not be the "Songbird of the NFL."

Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker is an accomplished opera singer. Tucker made a guest appearance in 2015 at the Baltimore Basilica's Christmas concert. He performed "Ave Maria."
