The length of the ban was not immediately known for Kerley.
Kerley has reeled in 22 receptions for 217 yards and a touchdown for the Jets (3-5), who host the Buffalo Bills (5-2) on Thursday night. The 28-year-old has played in 55 percent of the offensive snaps over the first eight games and also served as the team's punt returner in recent weeks.
Kerley had a fourth-quarter fumble on Sunday that proved costly in a 25-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
A fifth-round pick of the Jets in 2011, Kerley returned to the club in September after being released by the San Francisco 49ers. He has 268 catches for 3,109 yards and 13 touchdowns in his career.
