The Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns failed to work out a trade that would have sent quarterback AJ McCarron to Cleveland, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday.

The Bengals notified the NFL of the proposed trade at 3:55 p.m. ET, and the Browns notified the league shortly after. Because the Browns were past the 4 p.m. trade deadline, the league denied the trade. Cleveland protested with the league, asking that the trade be approved, but were denied.

Schefter's report was confirmed by multiple outlets.

Cincinnati would have received a second- and third-round draft pick in 2018 for McCarron, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

McCarron completed 66.4 percent of his passes in seven appearances during the 2015 regular season, filling in for the injured Andy Dalton. He threw six touchdown passes and two interceptions. In his lone playoff start, he completed 23 of 41 passes for 212 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

McCarron, a fifth-round pick in 2014, has taken three snaps in 2017.
