NFL reviewing hit from Eagles' Fletcher Cox on 49ers' Joe Staley

Oct. 30 (UPI) -- The NFL is considering a suspension for Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox after his hit on San Francisco 49ers tackle Joe Staley.

A source told ESPN Monday that the league is reviewing Sunday's play, which left Staley with a broken orbital bone. The report stated that the league is considering potential discipline, including a possible suspension.

Staley won't require surgery for the injury, but spent Sunday night at a Philadelphia hospital while the team departed for San Francisco.

Staley flew back to the Bay Area on Monday, NBC Sports Bay Area reported. He slept at his hotel Sunday, according to the report.

The play occurred with 1:37 remaining in the second quarter of the Eagles' 33-10 win against the 49ers at Lincoln Financial Field.

Niners quarterback C.J. Beathard dropped back to throw on a third and seven from the 32-yard line. Eagles cornerback Jalen Mills intercepted his pass to the right flank.

The Eagles defender returned the interception to the 12-yard line before juking laterally across the field. Cox collided with Staley on the cutback. After Staley went down, Cox threw his hands up in the air, signaling his belief of innocence.

Mills found the end zone on the 37-yard scamper, giving the Eagles a 15-0 advantage early on.

Cox had a sack, a tackle for a loss and two quarter hits in the victory. He now has 4.5 sacks in six games this season for the Eagles. The two-time Pro Bowl selection is one of the Eagles' best defensive players and was a first-round pick by the franchise in the 2012 NFL Draft.

"We always talk about the defense setting the tempo," Cox told reporters after the game, according to the team website. "The defense has to set the tempo. We set the tone. We set the tempo. We know we have to play really good just to give our offense chances."

Staley, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, is one of the 49ers' best players. He was a first-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. The 33-year-old has been very durable during his tenure in San Francisco, starting all 16 games in a season in seven of his last 10 campaigns.
