Nick Rose: Washington Redskins sign kicker, put Dustin Hopkins on injured reserve

Oct. 18 (UPI) -- The Washington Redskins have signed kicker Nick Rose.

Washington announced the transaction on Wednesday. The Redskins placed kicker Dustin Hopkins on injured reserve in a corresponding move.

"One phone call can really change your life. Thank you @Redskins," Rose tweeted Tuesday.

Hopkins, 27, is dealing with a right hip rotator muscle strain and had an MRI after Sunday's win against the San Francisco 49ers.

He must miss a minimum of eight games after the move and is a candidate to return. The three-year veteran joined the Redskins in 2015 after being waived by the New Orleans Saints. Hopkins was a seventh-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in the 2013 NFL Draft, but never attempted a kick for the franchise. He joined the Saints' practice squad in 2014.

During his Redskins career, Hopkins has made 84 percent of his field goals and 94.6 percent of his extra points. He has made 9 of 11 kicks this season. Last year he led the league with 42 field goal attempts.

Rose, 23, has never appeared in a regular season NFL contest. The Texas product made 71.1 percent of his kicks for the Longhorns. The Atlanta Falcons signed Rose in 2016 as an undrafted rookie free agent. He spent three months with Atlanta before getting waived. This offseason he was signed by the 49ers. He made 3 of 4 field goal attempts and hit 4 of 5 extra points in four preseason games.
