Indianapolis Colts shut down Andrew Luck due to shoulder soreness

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck is being shut down due to soreness in his surgically repaired right shoulder.

Luck, who has yet to take a snap this season and only recently returned to practice, is without a timetable for his return.

"The doctors and the trainers have decided to give him a cortisone shot to kind of take away some of that inflammation that's been happening," Colts general manager Chris Ballard told reporters. "He'll continue to rehab. We're just going to shut down the throwing right now to get this thing calmed back down."

Ballard emphasized that Luck was not being shut down for the season and there are no plans to place him on season-ending injured reserve. He said he doesn't expect his franchise quarterback to be out of practice long.

"Every player is different, every rehab is different, every surgery is different -- and that's why we haven't put a timeline on this," Ballard said. "Every guy is different. And the good news is Andrew is very in-tune with his body and he's being honest with what's going on, and that's what we want, that's what we need. I don't think anyone in this room can question Andrew Luck's toughness and willingness and ability to go out and play with pain."

Luck threw for 4,240 yards, 31 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 15 games last season after playing in just seven games in 2015 due to a variety of injuries that included an abdominal muscle tear.

The Colts are 2-4 this season with Jacoby Brissett starting the last five games at quarterback. The second-year pro out of North Carolina State is completing 59.8 percent of his passes for 1,209 yards but just three touchdowns.
