Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Defensive back Dexter McCoil is now a member of the San Francisco 49ers.

San Francisco announced the move on Tuesday. The 49ers claimed McCoil off of waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers. San Francisco waived defensive back Lorenzo Jerome in a corresponding transaction.

McCoil joined the NFL in 2016 as an undrafted free agent signing by the Chargers. The University of Tulsa product had one special teams tackle in two appearances this season for the Chargers. McCoil tallied 24 tackles, five passes defensed, an interception and three special teams tackles in 16 games last season for the Chargers. He started twice in 2016.

The 26-year-old spent the 2014 season in the Arena Football League as a member of the Los Angeles Kiss. The 6 foot 4, 220 pound defender played for the Edmonton Eskimos in 2014 in the Canadian Football League.

Jerome, 23, had three tackles in four appearances this season for the 49ers. The 5 foot 10, 204 pound defender signed with the franchise in May as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Saint Francis University.

"You know, I know [general manager] John [Lynch] and everyone upstairs has been studying for a little bit," 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Tuesday, regarding the move. They liked his tape throughout the preseason and the season, not just at safety but also on special teams. They thought they could upgrade us, so we made a move."
