The San Francisco 49ers signed cornerback K'Waun Williams to a three-year contract extension through the 2020 season, the team announced Friday.

The 5-foot-9, 183-pound Williams originally signed a one-year deal with the 49ers on Feb. 22. In his first season in San Francisco, he has played in each of the team's first three games (one start) and registered 14 tackles and two passes defensed.

"Since joining us this offseason, K'Waun has displayed every trait and characteristic we want to see from our players," 49ers general manager John Lynch said in a statement. "He is a tremendous competitor on the field and a true professional in our building. K'Waun has continued to get better and better every day and we wanted to ensure he would be a part of what we are building moving forward. I am really excited for both him and our team."

The 26-year-old Williams, originally signed by Cleveland on May 20, 2014, as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Pittsburgh, spent two seasons (2014-15) with the Browns, appearing in 26 games (10 starts) and recording 67 tackles, 10 passes defensed, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two sacks.
