Kansas City Chiefs: Running back C.J. Spiller cut again

The Kansas City Chiefs once again released veteran running back C.J. Spiller in advance of Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

To take Spiller's place on the 53-man roster, the Chiefs promoted running back Akeem Hunt, who also is a multi-phase special teams player. Hunt, 24, was signed to the Chiefs' practice squad before their season opener against the New England Patriots.

Spiller, 30, has now been signed and released by the Chiefs three times this season. He initially was released during the team's final roster cut down, only to be brought back the following day when cornerback Steven Nelson was placed on injured reserve.

Spiller was then re-signed and released again on the day of the season opener so the team would not have to guarantee his contract for 2017. He was re-signed again the next day as the third running back behind Kareem Hunt and backup Charcandrick West.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Spiller split the 2016 season between the New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks and New York Jets. He recorded just six carries for 18 yards and has not had 100 carries in a season since 2013 when he played for the Buffalo Bills, who drafted him ninth overall in 2010.
