Oklahoma Sooners: Baker Mayfield plants flag on Ohio State's home field

By Alex Butler

Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Quarterback Baker Mayfield carved up Ohio State's secondary before planting an Oklahoma Sooners flag at the 50-yard line Saturday at Ohio Stadium.

Mayfield's emotional gesture came after the No. 5 Sooners knocked off the No. 2 Buckeyes 31-16. The senior quarterback completed 27-of-35 passes for 386 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.

After the final whistle, Mayfield ran to the Buckeyes' logo and waved the flag as his teammates crowded around. He eventually slammed the flag into the turf.

"We've had that mood in the locker room that nobody believes in us," Mayfield told the Oklahoman after the game. "We were able to catch the fact that nobody picked us on GameDay. We saw it on social media throughout the week that about 80 percent of the country picked Ohio State to beat us. Right now, we believe in ourselves, and that's all that matters."

The quarterback's stunt came a season after the Buckeyes beat the Sooners 45-24 in Norman. After that game, the Buckeyes sang their fight song on Sooners turf at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

"That was embarrassing for them to sing their fight song on our field," Mayfield told reporters, according to Yahoo Sports.. "They are probably feeling the same way right now."

Mayfield also had more than 320 passing yards and three scores last week against UTEP. He has yet to throw an interception this season. Mayfield's name is firmly implanted in the Heisman Trophy race.

The Sooners host the Tulane Green Wave Saturday in Norman.
