Cleveland Browns: Cody Kessler guides shutout win over Chicago Bears

Cody Kessler completed 11 of 19 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown in the first half Thursday night to spark the Cleveland Browns to a 25-0 victory over the host Chicago Bears.

Kessler found wide receiver Rannell Hall for a 27-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Hall spun and went to the end zone after eluding a shove attempt along the sideline by Bears defensive back Rashaad Reynolds.

Kessler left to start the second half in favor of Kevin Hogan and had more opportunities to throw than Bears rookie starter Mitchell Trubisky.

In four first-half series, Trubisky threw only four times with two completions for 10 yards. He finished 2 of 5 for 10 yards.

Trubisky began his first preseason start by handing off nine straight times in three series, causing Soldier Field fans to boo the play calling.

The Browns added to their lead in the third quarter on a 53-yard field goal by Zane Gonzalez, who is battling Cody Parkey for a roster spot.

Hogan completed 13 of 18 passes for 180 yards, including a 51-yard TD to wide-open Randall Telfer in the third quarter for a 19-0 lead. He added a 21-yard TD pass to Jordan Leslie in the fourth quarter to make it 25-0.

The play of both Browns quarterbacks only fueled talk backup Brock Osweiler could be cut or traded.

The Bears turned to Connor Shaw at quarterback midway through the second quarter and he failed to finish the game because of injuries. Shaw completed 11 of 18 for 110 yards and was sacked in the third quarter by Calvin Pryor III and Karter Schult for a safety.

Shaw suffered a leg injury while scrambling in the final two minutes and Trubisky had to retake the field. He threw an incompletion and was then sacked on the game's final play.

Bears starting quarterback Mike Glennon and backup Mark Sanchez did not play. Cleveland held out rookie starting quarterback DeShone Kizer and backup Brock Osweiler.

Both teams started and used mostly reserves in anticipation of next week's kickoff to the regular season.

The Bears lost linebacker Lamarr Houston and wide receiver Victor Cruz to knee injuries.

Browns tackle Rod Johnson left with a knee injury and running back Matthew Dayes went out with a neck injury. Houston missed 14 games last year with a torn ACL, and two years earlier also had a torn ACL.
