David Akers: Philadelphia Eagles inducting kicker into Hall of Fame

Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Former All-Pro kicker David Akers will be inducted into the Philadelphia Eagles' Hall of Fame this season.

Philadelphia announced the honor on Wednesday.

Akers, 42, will be inducted into the franchise's Hall of Fame on October 23 when the Eagles host the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football at Lincoln Financial Field.

"David Akers embodies everything we look for in a player both on and off the field," Eagles chairman/CEO Jeffrey Lurie said when he made the announcement on Wednesday at the Taking Flight for Autism fundraiser at Lincoln Financial Field.

"He was talented, reliable, tough, and of course clutch. He played a major role in the success of this franchise during his time here, but he also loved this city and our fans and he made a tremendous impact in the community. We are proud to enshrine him alongside the greatest figures in Eagles history."

Akers is the franchise leader in regular season games played (188) and postseason games played (19). He spent 12 years with the Eagles, from 1999 through 2010. He was also involved in nine playoff games. He was with the Eagles for six NFC East titles and went to Super Bowl XXXIX with the squad. Akers made the Pro Bowl five times and was named first-team All-Pro twice.

The 16-year NFL veteran entered the NFL in 1998 with the Washington Redskins. He played for the San Francisco 49ers in 2011 and 2012. During the 2011 season, he led the league in field goal attempts and field goals made, earning his second first-team All-Pro nod. He spent his last season in 2013 with the Detroit Lions.

While in Philadelphia, Akers ranked No. 2 in the NFL in points, behind Ryan Longwell. He also ranked second in field goals made, behind Matt Stover. He was a member of the NFL's All-Decade team of the 2000s.
