The Lions announced the signing on Monday.

Orndoff, 23, had 897 yards and 13 touchdowns on 58 receptions during his four year college career with the Panthers. The Lions waived/injured defensive tackle Bruce Gaston in a corresponding move.

Orndoff originally signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted rookie free agent. He was waived/injured by the Steelers on August 3. He reverted to the team's injured reserve list after clearing waivers. Orndoff was removed from the list after reaching an injury settlement with the Steelers a few days later. He then became a free agent.

The Lions also have Eric Ebron, Darren Fells, Cole Wick, Michael Roberts and Tim Wright at tight end. Ebron is currently sidelined with a pulled hamstring. Fells signed with the Lions in March. The Lions drafted Roberts in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Toledo. Wright re-signed with the Lions on August 9.
