Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry under investigation for possible battery involving girlfriend

Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Jarvis Landry is under investigation for possible battery, according to multiple reports Monday.

The investigation stems from an incident involving Landry and his girlfriend earlier this year in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Dolphins coach Adam Gase confirmed Monday the team is aware of the report, but he declined to comment further.

The Broward County State Attorney's Office confirmed to CBS Miami on Monday that the Fort Lauderdale Police Department presented them with the case. No decision is expected this week on charges.

Landry's girlfriend filed a paternity suit against him in April in Broward County court, according to the Miami Herald. However, she released a statement to NFL Network via a publicist on Monday in support of Landry.

Estrella Cerqueira said in the statement that she did not call police following what she termed a "vocal disagreement" and said she never had any concern for her physical well-being.

"There were no arrests made, there were no criminal charges, I was not in any way physically harmed," the statement read, with Cerqueira noting that the couple is going through a civil family court case. "... Emotions are high but I would like to make it very clear that Jarvis would never, ever do anything to harm me or anyone else."

Cerqueira added that the couple is "happy raising" its daughter and made a plea "to the media that they refrain from spreading this completely false story."

The Dolphins' front office notified the NFL when it became aware of the investigation in the spring, team sources told ESPN's Jeff Darlington.

The 24-year-old Landry, the Dolphins' second-round pick in 2014, has led Miami in receiving in his three seasons. He had his second consecutive 1,000-yard receiving season in 2016, catching 94 passes for 1,136 yards and four touchdowns in 16 games.

For his career, Landry has caught 288 passes for 3,051 yards and 13 touchdowns in 48 games.

Landry is heading into the last season of his rookie contract and has been discussing an extension with the team. He is due $893,850 this season.

"I don't know if (it gets done) before the season," Dolphins owner Stephen Ross told ESPN last week. "But like I said, it's not really mandatory that we do it before the season."
