Jacksonville Jaguars sign safety Jeron Johnson

Aug. 7 (UPI) -- The Jacksonville Jaguars added to an already exceptional secondary with the addition of safety Jeron Johnson.

Jacksonville announced the move on Sunday. The Jaguars released third-year safety James Sample in a corresponding transaction. Jacksonville's current roster sits at 90 players.

The Seattle Seahawks picked up Johnson in 2011 as an undrafted free agent.

Johnson, 29, has also spent time with the Washington Redskins and Kansas City Chiefs. He has 75 tackles, two sacks, a pass defended and a forced fumble in 64 career appearances. Johnson was also a part of the Seahawks' Super Bowl XLVII winning team. The Boise State product was first-team All-WAC in 2010 with 82 tackles. He will wear No. 23 for the Jaguars.

Sample, 29, was a fourth round pick by the Jaguars in the 2015 NFL Draft. He had 13 tackles and a pass defended in four games in 2015, starting twice for the Jaguars.

Jacksonville boasted the fifth-best pass defense in the NFL last season, allowing 215.2 yards per game. The Jaguars tied for second best in yards per completion (6.6) and allowed the third-fewest first downs via the pass. Jacksonville also added Barry Church and A.J. Bouye to their secondary this offseason. Johnson is expected to back up Church at strong safety.
